Ask HN: Non-disparagement agreement that never expires

I have worked at a company for many years that is going through a merger. I have been asked to sign a new Employment Agreement that includes a strong Non-Disparagement clause. The language states that the clause applies "During the Employment Period and thereafter", which seems to read as "for the rest of your life" to me. When I brought my concerns to management, I was told this was common for the industry, and that they didn't understand why I was "asking for the right to disparage the company within a certain time frame" Is this normal, am I overreacting to this?
